Violent Offences

There are a variety of crimes that fall within the definition of a ‘Violent Offence.’ Amongst these include: uttering threats, criminal harassment, common assault, assault causing bodily harm, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, sexual assault, forcible confinement, robbery, firearm offences and murder.

Property Offences

'Property Offences’ encompass crimes such as theft, fraud, and possession of property obtained through crime, mischief, arson and breaking and entering.

Drug Offences

'The possession and/or production of narcotics as well as the possession for the purpose of trafficking and/or importing are all categorized as a ‘Drug Offence.’

Driving Offences

There exist two distinct categories within the definition of a ‘Driving Offence.’ An offence can be committed under the [1] Criminal Code and/or [2] Highway Traffic Act.

Weapons Offences

According to the Criminal Code of Canada, a ‘Weapons Offence’ can be defined as: Careless storage/use/handling of a firearm, pointing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, the unauthorized possession of a firearm, the possession of a firearm with the knowledge it [possession] is unauthorized, and/or the possession of a restricted weapon with ammunition.

Appeals

Depending on the outcome of the trial, Defence Counsel or the Crown Prosecution Service has the power to file an appeal. With an appeal, a criminal conviction can potentially be overturned or the original sentence can be reduced.
